Standard pathway
The standard path towards general registration, through AMC assessments and supervised practice.
The idea
This route is for most doctors with an eligible overseas medical degree. After confirmation of eligibility, doctors must obtain an “AMC Certificate”, which confirms their ability to practice at a standard comparable to Australian graduates.
It leads to general medical registration, rather than recognition as a specialist.
Your main choices
All doctors taking this path must complete the AMC multiple-choice exam. In phase 2, doctors can take the AMC clinical exam (offered in person or online subject to AMC eligibility and availability), or apply for workplace-based assessment (WBA) while working in an approved job in Australia - you need an approved job, registration and an approved place in the program - job alone does not guarantee WBA entry.
Can you work along the way?
Eligible doctors may apply for limited registration after the multiple-choice exam, and work under approved supervision while completing the AMC Certificate (via either the WBA route or the AMC clinical route). General registration requires the Certificate and the required approved supervised practice. Ahpra confirms what applies to you.
This is a general overview, not a confirmation of eligibility. Check current requirements with the responsible organisations below before applying.
