Specialist recognition through a college

Have your overseas specialist training assessed by the Australian college for your specialty.

The idea

The college compares your completed training and experience with those of an Australian-trained specialist. It then defines any extra work, assessments or training needed for recognition.

How it works

A doctor’s training and experience may be assessed as “substantially comparable”, “partially comparable” or “not comparable”. If you are substantially or partially comparable, the college will outline the further requirements for specialist recognition. A “not comparable” outcome does not allow you to progress through that specialist recognition assessment; you will need to explore another registration or training route.

Other pathway choices

Check whether your exact qualification meets the Expedited Specialist rules, as this may be a faster route to specialist registration.

You can also explore a non-specialist job through a separate general-registration route.

This is a general overview, not a confirmation of eligibility. Check current requirements with the responsible organisations below before applying.
