Competent Authority pathway

Use recognised overseas training or assessments and experience without sitting AMC exams.

The idea

Some doctors who have been registered and worked in another country may be granted registration without the need for the AMC assessment pathway (Standard Pathway). This route can reduce assessment time and costs because AMC examinations are not required. A competent authority is an overseas organisation whose medical assessments the Medical Board accepts (for example, the General Medical Council in the UK).

Assessment depends on where you have been registered, what assessments were undertaken as part of this registration, and a period of work in that setting. Your nationality or country of graduation alone is not enough.

How it works

Eligible doctors usually apply for provisional registration under the Competent Authority Pathway and complete approved supervised practice in Australia before applying for general registration. You still need to have your qualification approved, provide evidence of English proficiency and other registration requirements.

What it allows

This pathway can suit eligible non-specialists and overseas specialists, including GPs, who are seeking general registration in Australia.

It does not recognise an overseas specialty; specialist registration uses a separate process.

This is a general overview, not a confirmation of eligibility. Check current requirements with the responsible organisations below before applying.
